Our Story

Privacy Policy

The legacy story began in 1959 when two brothers, Roy and Don Tonks, made their dream come true by starting an insulation and acoustical supply and service company in Los Angeles, CA called Insul-Acoustics Inc.

As Insul-Acoustics business grew a business relationship was developed with Owens-Corning who supplied acoustical panels and insulation to Insul-Acoustics. In the early 1960’s Owens Corning developed a wall and ceiling sound absorbing blanket and the manufacturing equipment for the music and filming industry. But Owens Corning did not see growth or business potential with the sound blanket product line. However, Roy and Don did envision the business potential for sound blankets, and Insul-Acoustics was positioned in Los Angeles to manufacture, sell, service, and supply film studios and other entertainment venues with the great performing sound absorbing blankets.

Owens Corning sold the blanket manufacturing equipment and rights to Don and Roy. On June 16, 1964, Insul-Acoustics made their first sound blankets under a newly formed company called Insul-Quilts Inc. The new company name was derived by the blankets having distinct visual features of Quilts and the stitching process.

The first Insul-Quilt blanket manufacturing site was in Pasadena, California and by 1967 Roy realized the growth potential for these blankets in the LA film studio design and builds. So, they developed advertising and marketing literature which included sketched pictures of the quilts and test results for Sound Absorption and Sound Transmission Loss. The standard blanket offered then was a 4 foot wide by 16 foot long white cloth blanket.

Some of the earliest Insul-Quilt blanket customers included Warner Bros., Universal Studios, CBS, Twentieth Century Fox, Samuel Goldwyn Studios, and others. Today, these same customers are still installing the blankets from Insul-Quilts! Success was driven by blanket product performance, quality, safety, service, and Studio Architects specifying Insul-Quilts by name in the studio design blueprints making it the “Standard” acoustical wall and ceiling product treatment.

In 1969 a secondary use for the Studio blanket was identified as a wall and ceiling Plenum Barrier for the construction tenant improvement and build trade. Business for the acoustical product installations and blanket orders continued to grow so Roy and Don moved operations to a larger facility in South El Monte, California in 1984, which is the current business location.

Roy managed and operated Insul-Quilts Inc into his late 80’s at which time his daughter took over the business along with Roy’s grandson carrying the tradition forward. Today, the business is still family-owned and thriving with product lines that include multiple interior and exterior sound blanket options and aluminum faced radiant barriers for the construction industry.
