What is a Quilted Plenum Blanket?

The Quilted Plenum Blanket is a flexible insulating blanket, sound barrier and Class A Fire Rated barrier approved by the City of Los Angeles and other cities for use as a Plenum Barrier. The flexible blankets are made with inorganic fiber and fiberglass cloth attached to a foil laminated fiber board.

This Quilted Plenum Blanket is the right choice because it can replace full-height non-rated stud/drywall walls, especially where mechanical ducts, wires, or other obstructions need to be worked around. Our blankets are easy to cut and modify at the job site and installed faster and much more cost effective than drywall.

Our blanket features 90% sound absorption, STC rating of 16, an R-Value = 9, a 50% recyclable content, is certified VOC compliant, and reflects 97% of radiant heat. Standard color options used are white. Black is also offered.

Our Plenum Blanket can be suspended using 20 gauge metal studs from the structure above and screwing to either the top or side of the partition below. Vertical sides should butt together, snug and either taped or wire sewn together to eliminate sound transmission between the blankets.

Installation Methods

The Quilted Plenum Blanket can be install from the top of the wall to the underside of the ceiling above.

You can use it in different configurations:

Plenum Blanket barrier configuration – This is the most common configuration using our Blanket as Plenum Barrier.

Cloud Configuration – The blanket can be hung up to 25″ without additional support.

The Plenum Blanket has the City of Los Angeles approval for a plenum installation. It meets the requirement for use under section 95.0105 and section 95.1002 of the Los Angeles Mechanical Code.

Other uses for the Plenum Blanket include soundproofing and sound-absorbing. In addition, it is designed for noise control system projects. It can be used as laid ceilings, in partitions, attached to doors/walls, fixtures and around ducts. It is essential to recognize and understand the difference between both, as we mention in our blog, “Are Soundproofing and Sound Absorbing the same?”

We will start with what is soundproofing? Soundproofing is the process of reducing or removing unwanted noise within or entering any space or room. There are many different ways of creating a soundproofed room or building, and it is just a matter of assessing the amount of sound you wish to absorb and block out.

Sound-absorbing is the process of dissipating sound energy by way of materials or objects absorbing sound energy. For example, an acoustic absorber absorbs sound waves instead of reflecting them, preventing them from spreading in space and passing through walls.

The Plenum Blankets have both an NRC (absorption of 90%+) and STC (blocking 16 dB) rating of 16, and these blankets can do both block and absorb sound simultaneously, making them ideal for both soundproofing and sound absorption.

The Plenum Blanket’s foil backing is excellent for installations where a semi-rigid surface is required. When used in a ceiling baffle configuration, it is an efficient and economical way to mitigate sound and echo problems in large spaces.
